Marine predators superbly adapted to undersea hunting. Also known as "sea devils", these beings dwell in coastal waters, forming organized groups that raid shore communities.

Description

"This scaly humanoid has a long, fish-like tail. Its arms and legs end in webbed claws, and its piscine head features a toothy maw."

"This humanoid has scaly skin with webbed fingers and toes, and sharp fangs fill its mouth. It has a long tail ending in a curved fin, and it has fins on its arms, back, and head. Its great, staring eyes are deep black."

An adult sahuagin stands 7 feet tall and weighs about 250 pounds. Most of the "sea devils" feature green coloration, darker along the back and lighter on the belly. Many have dark stripes, bands, or spots, but these tend to fade with age.

The race is prone to beneficial mutations, and when a mutant is born it almost always rises to the society's nobility or rulership. The most common sahuagin mutation is an extra pair of arms (granting 2 additional claw attacks or the opportunity to wield more weapons).

Information

Ravenous and cruel, the sahuagin are, unfortunately, among the most prosperous oceanic races. Great cities raised by these creatures darken the deep ocean trenches, and many are the near-coastal fortresses where they launch endless raids against their air-breathing enemies who dwell in close proximity to the shore.

Warlike and proud, the sahuagin rarely ally with others who live in the sea, and view most other aquatic races such as the aboleths, locathah, merfolk, and their ilk as competitors. The only creatures they seem to respect and adore apart from their own kind are sharks, for in these relentless predators the sahuagin see much of themselves.

The sea devils live by a code of ritualized behavior developed over millennia. Every member of a sahuagin community knows its place well — and remains there. The sahuagin pride themselves on self-sufficiency and strict adherence to their social code.

Sahuagin dwell in communities of varying sizes, from villages to cities, built of stone and other natural materials deep beneath the ocean waves. The creatures employ a variety of defenses, both passive (such as seaweed camouflage) and active (such as traps and tame sharks), to protect their communities.

Sahuagin speak their own language, "Sahuagin". Thanks to their high Intelligence scores, most sahuagin also speak 2 bonus languages, usually Common and Aquan. They also have the innate magical ability to communicate telepathically with sharks.

In Eberron

The sahuagin inhabit the ocean depths surrounding Shargon's Teeth, an island chain between Xen'drik and Khorvaire. Today, the sea devils live within the sunken ruins of their ancient empire.

Most have turned to the worship of the dark god known as the Devourer; a popular belief among the followers of this god is that a sahuagin gains power and knowledge by eating other intelligent creatures, which can make a trip to the ancient empire a dangerous experience. Although the Devourer is a chaotic evil deity, sahuagin of all alignments can be found in the undersea realm.

Sahuagin are relatively common in the cliffside areas of Sharn, negotiating with sailors for safe passage through the straits. A knowledge of the Sahuagin language is considered a key quality for success as a sea captain.

In addition to their knowledge of the islands and the relics of their own ancient civilization, the sahuagin may possess or know of ruins or artifacts of Xen'drik that sank beneath the waves after the cataclysm.
